Apartment fire claims life of Illinois man

Thursday, 26 December 2013 14:33 Published in Local News
An apartment fire in Worden, Illinois has claimed the life of a disabled man. Authorities say 45 year old Robert Blotevogel was found by firefighters on the living room floor of his apartment. The Belleville News Democrat reports that the victim used a wheelchair and was unable to escape the blaze..
The Worden Fire Department was called to the scene at about 7:15 Thursday morning.  The newspaper reports that a retired firefighter and a former firefighter who live in the area were helping people out of their apartments.
Assistant Fire Chief Bryan Steinmeyer said, "Without the help of those two people, it could have been a lot worse." All other residents were safely evacuated and none had to be treated for injuries. Approximately seven to ten people are temporarily displaced by the fire.  The Madison County Sheriff's Department and Illinois State Fire Marshal are investigating the cause of the fire. The cause of death will not be released until toxicology results are completed.

Trees recycled for fish

Thursday, 26 December 2013 13:29 Published in Local News

That dried out, old Christmas tree is good for more than firewood.  It can become a home for fish.  The Missouri Department of Conservation is accepting donated natural trees to establish fish habitats in two St. Louis-area lakes. Officials say man-made lakes don't have much fish habitat, and the trees provide a woody sanctuary.

Conservation crews tie the Christmas trees to concrete blocks and sink them in 4 to 7 feet of water where the trees attract invertebrates -- a good food source for small fish, which then attract larger fish. Young fish also can hide among the trees.

Donated trees will be accepted until January 13th at Creve Coeur Lake and at Lake 34 in the August A. Busch Conservation Area.

Powerball winner drawn in Missouri

Thursday, 26 December 2013 12:45 Published in Local News

It was a very Merry Christmas for one lottery player in Missouri.  The winning Powerball ticket from last night's drawing was sold in Missouri and matched all six numbers. The jackpot totaled $71.5 million. The winning numbers were: 23, 28, 38, 39, 56, and the Powerball number was 32.

Lottery officials advise that if you hold the winning ticket, be sure to sign the back and put it in a safe place until you can take it to the Missouri Lottery Headquarters in Jefferson City.

The Missouri winner has 180 days to claim this prize, which in this case is June 23, 2014.  The winner can select to receive the jackpot prize in 30 graduated annuity payments or in one lump-sum payment worth approximately $39.8 million before taxes.
