A metro-east school district is trying to determine if one of its teachers helped students cheat on state achievement tests last year. The Belleville News-Democrat reports that Highland Community Unit School District 5 has launched an internal investigation this week.
Superintendent Michael Sutton tells the paper they're investigating allegations from some students that point toward "testing irregularity" during administration of the Illinois Standard Achievement Test last school year (2012-13). The teacher under investigation isn't being identified.
The district's findings will be submitted to the state Board of Education which will make a final determination.
Metro-east police say the death of a Worchester, NY woman inside a gas station restroom was probably drug related.
Madison County Sheriff Robert Hertz says 25 year old Angela Lamar, a Belleville native, had been traveling through Illinois with her boyfriend, a truck driver, when the couple stopped at a gas station along I-70 just outside of Highland.
Lamar was unresponsive when she was found inside the station restroom around 1:00 a.m. Sunday. She was pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Hospital in Highland.
The Belleville News-Democrat reports that investigators seized a syringe and heroin-filled capsules during their investigation. Sheriff Hertz says investigators suspect a drug overdose, but toxicology tests are still pending.

Police don't suspect foul play, but a cause of death has not yet been determined. The investigation is ongoing.
Friends and family held a memorial service for Holthaus at the Highland town square Sunday evening.

And the body of Aaron Ripperda is coming home Monday.
His remains will arrive at Lambert Airport between 2:30 PM and 3:00 PM and then be taken to his hometown of Highland, Illinois. Lambert Airport Police, Missouri Highway Patrol, Illinois State Police and, The Patriot Guard will escort Ripperda's body to Highland.
