MU Apartments where firefighter died to be razed

Thursday, 13 March 2014 04:10 Published in Local News
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - The University of Missouri says it will demolish an apartment complex where a Columbia firefighter died Feb. 22 when a walkway collapsed.
University Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin emphasized in making the announcement Wednesday that engineers have inspected all buildings at the University Village Apartment Complex and declared them safe for occupancy.
Still, Loftin said the 58-year-old complex will close June 30 in the interest of safety and be razed shortly after that.
Veteran firefighter Bruce Britt died when he became trapped by rubble while helping evacuate residents from the partial collapse of the second-floor walkway.
The complex houses graduate students and their families. There is also a child-care center on site.
Loftin says tenants will be allowed to terminate their leases before June 30 without financial penalties.
NEW YORK (AP) — Rescue workers are using back hoes and a bulldozer to search for any victims still buried after an explosion demolished two Manhattan buildings. Meanwhile, questions are swirling about the gas leak that triggered the blast and whether complaints about gas odors had been ignored.
The explosion Wednesday morning killed at least six people and injured more than 60, with searchers still trying to locate others. At the site on Park Avenue and 116th Street, thermal imaging cameras are being used to identify heat spots — bodies or pockets of fire.
City officials say searches of the street are complete and no victims have been found there. Workers initially were hampered from fully accessing the building space because of a sinkhole caused by a subsurface water main break.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - A St. Louis County man has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison for transporting five female victims for prostitution purposes between Missouri and five other states.
Federal prosecutors say 45 year old Barry Wimberly of Hazelwood pleaded guilty in December to one felony count of transportation for purposes of prostitution. He was sentenced Wednesday.
Court documents show that Wimberly operated a prostitution business, transporting women for sex between Missouri and Illinois, North Dakota, Minnesota, Georgia and Florida.
