Phase 2 of Arch grounds re-do finds funding

Thursday, 21 February 2013 08:30 Published in Around Town
The next phase of the planned improvements to the Arch grounds is set to get underway this summer.

Crews had already planned to begin construction of the "lid" over I-70.

Now, the rebuild of Leonor K. Sullivan Boulevard, which runs along the riverfront at the base of the Arch steps, will also start this year. The road will be elevated and redesigned to include bike paths and pedestrian walkways.

Funding had already been in place for the $47 million park that will cap the highway. Newly found savings from that project will help fund the other.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that engineers have determined that the concrete walls of the "depressed section" of I-70 don’t need to be replaced, as originally thought. So the $11-million cost savings on that project will fund the Leonor K. Sullivan rebuild.

The Ellisville City Council is moving forward with an effort to oust Mayor Adam Paul. The council voted 5-2 Wednesday night to have the city attorney draft an impeachment resolution against Paul. Only Paul and Councilwoman Linda Reel opposed the resolution.

The move comes just two days after the Ellisville Charter Enforcement Commission unanimously recommended that the impeachment complaint be thrown out.

Ironically, it's Martin who will present the resolution at the March 6th council meeting.

The specifics of the complaint against the mayor haven't been released, but Martin has clashed frequently with other council members over a controversial Walmart TIF that was passed last year. Martin had been elected last spring after campaigning against the TIF.

The mayor's attorney, Chet Pleban, says the impeachment effort will be met with litigation.
