Goldenrod Showboat to be auctioned

Tuesday, 14 May 2013 11:21 Published in Local News

The scrap heap may be the final resting place for The Goldenrod Showboat, which shut down in 2001 after decades on the St. Louis and St. Charles riverfront.

The St Louis Post Dispatch reports  the Historic Riverboat Preservation Association,  a non-profit group has failed to raise the money needed to renovate the 104-year-old vessel, which has been in storage on the Illinois River in Calhoun County since 2003.

court-ordered auction will be held Saturday at the boat’s current dock north of Kampsville to try to cover $69,508 in unpaid mooring fees and other costs.

The boat was declared a national historic landmark in 1968.

The Goldenrod’s future has been in doubt since it was closed in 2001 as a stationary dinner theater in St. Charles after a Coast Guard safety check.

Four siblings killed in a Randolph County, Illinois house fire that prosecutors say was intentionally set are about to be laid to rest.

Services are scheduled for this afternoon at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Steeleville for 12-year-old Ethan Owen and his siblings, 9-year-old Kailey Owen and 5-year-old twins Brandon Owen and Landon Owen.

The Randolph County coroner says the children died of apparent smoke inhalation during the fire early last Friday at their home in Percy. The village is located about 60 miles southeast of St. Louis. Their parents managed to escape.

33-year-old Derrick Twardoski faces four counts of first-degree murder in the case. During a court appearance Monday, Twardoski wept while he pleaded not guilty, was denied bond and was assigned a public defender to represent him.
