Baseball fans are not the only group hoping the Cardinals go far in the postseason. Businesses are rooting for the Redbirds.

Ruth Sergenian is the Director of Economic Research for the St. Louis Regional Chamber says each game in the NLDS has an impact around $5.3 million. The total impact on the region would depend based on the number of home games played, but Sergenian estimates that if the Cards went through the World Series, it could be an input of nearly $70 million.

The season's economic impact was $347 million, up from $331 million for the 2012 season.

Aide who left gun in Missouri Capitol bathroom resigns

Thursday, 03 October 2013 17:30 Published in Local News

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - An aide to Missouri House Speaker Tim Jones has resigned after leaving a loaded handgun in the basement of the state Capitol last month.

The gun belonging to Dave Evans was found Sept. 20 in a black, nylon holster on top of a toilet paper dispenser in a restroom. Police say Evans has a permit to carry concealed weapons.

The speaker's chief of staff, Tom Smith, confirmed Thursday that Evans resigned Sept. 27 as a legislative assistant to Jones. Smith says he was satisfied with the corrective actions Evans agreed to after the incident but that Evans thought it was best for himself and colleagues to step down.

A 2011 Missouri law allows elected officials and their employees to carry concealed firearms inside the Capitol if they have permits.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The federal government shutdown is blocking Missouri Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder from filing his congressional exploratory committee.

Kinder completed the paperwork, but the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Thursday he has been unable to file with the Federal Election Commission. The committee is for a possible run for the 8th Congressional District that covers southeastern Missouri.

Exploratory committees allow potential candidates to raise money. Kinder says he will make a decision in weeks whether to run for Congress. He is serving his third term as lieutenant governor.

Republican U.S. Rep. Jason Smith currently represents the 8th District after replacing Jo Ann Emerson who resigned from Congress. Smith bested Kinder and others this year when an 84-person committee of local Republican leaders selected the party's nominee for a June special election.
