Missouri senator forgoes re-election bid

Thursday, 13 March 2014 15:33 Published in Local News
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - A state senator from eastern Missouri is forgoing a re-election bid, potentially setting off a scramble among Republicans vying to replace him in the reliably GOP district.

Republican Sen. Brian Nieves, of Washington, withdrew Thursday after initially filing for re-election.

One candidate, House Republican Dave Schatz, of Sullivan, had already filed to challenge Nieves. But with Nieves' exit, Republican House Speaker Tim Jones, of Eureka, is now also considering a run.

Jones says he will take time next week to weigh his options. Nieves did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A potential primary could be an expensive contest. Schatz loaned his campaign $350,000, and Jones reports having $900,000 in his campaign account.

The Senate district includes Franklin County and parts of western St. Louis County.

Missouri holds off Texas A&M at SEC 91-83 in 2OT

Thursday, 13 March 2014 15:14 Published in Sports
ATLANTA (AP) - Jabari Brown scored 26 points, Earnest Ross added 24 and Missouri barely kept alive its hopes of an NCAA bid, beating Texas A&M 91-83 in double overtime in the second round of the Southeastern Conference tournament Thursday.

The Tigers (22-10) squandered a nine-point lead in the second half, and Texas A&M (17-15) forced another extra period when little-used senior Blake McDonald made a steal under the basket and flipped to Alex Caruso for the tying layup with 8 seconds remaining.

Missouri twice failed to get off a shot with chances to win the game in the closing seconds. It didn't matter. The Tigers finally wore down the Aggies, who had lost at Missouri 57-56 just eight days earlier.

Caruso led Texas A&M with 28 points, hitting 5 of 9 from 3-point range.

Two communities warn of abduction attempts

Thursday, 13 March 2014 14:23 Published in Local News

St. Louis, MO (KTRS) - A pair of St. Charles County cities are warning residents about two separate abduction attempts.

Lake St. Louis police say that around 6:30 Thursday morning, they received a report of a white male offering a child candy. That child refused and went back into the house. The family called police. The suspect is described as a white man around 20 years old. He was wearing a red baseball cap and blue shirt.

O'Fallon, Missouri police heard the report and they had a similar incident Tuesday evening. The child in that case gave a similar description of a suspect. The two kids gave different descriptions of the car the suspect drove off in.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Lake St. Louis or O’Fallon Police departments.
