Missouri State Highway Patrol to up DWI enforcement

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has plans to crackdown on drunk drivers this month.

The department issued a statement saying they will up DWI checkpoints through St. Charles, Lincoln, and Jefferson counties. The Highway Patrol says those counties have a high number of drunk-driver accidents.

According to officials, intoxicated drivers are involved in over a quarter of all fatal crashes in the state. 

Horse jockey suspended for role in Fairmount race

The Illinois Racing Board handed down a suspension to one of the jockeys in a controversial race at Fairmount park last week.

The board determined jockey John Lejeune did not put forth his best effort when racing against Robert "Cowboy" Jones. Jones was the sentimental favorite to win the race--at 70-years-old he could have been the first jockey to win a race in seven decades.

Lejeune is suspended for 60 days.

East St. Louis school to start later than planned

Some extra summer vacation time for students in East St. Louis School District 189.

Work to repair the roof of East St. Louis Senior High School is not going to finish on schedule. School was supposed to start on August 21. Classes will now begin on September 3.  

Over 1,300 students at the high school get nearly two extra weeks of time off.

New School Start Time Schedule for 2013-14:

East St. Louis Senior High School — 7:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.

All District Middle Schools  — 7:30 a.m.  – 2:30 p.m.

All District Elementary Schools 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
