East St. Louis police are questioning a relative after a 5-month-old girl was allegedly beaten.

Officers say they were called to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital Wednesday night about a case of possible child abuse. A hospital employee to police the infant had been severely beaten--suffering injuries to her eye, ribs, skull, and brain.

Police say the child was in the care of relatives when she was injured and are questioning that man now.

A man is facing murder charges connected to remains found in an abandoned septic tank.

Prosecutors say Melvin Scherrer murdered Samuel Francis and stuffed his body inside the tank of a home near Bonne Terre. Francis was last seen on December 17 of last year and was reported missing on December 23.

In addition to the murder accusation, Scherrer faces four more felony charges. He is being held without bond.
