One week after Bobbie Billups disappeared into the Mississippi River, the St. Louis Fire Department found his body.
Billups was fishing under the Merchants Bridge in downtown when he went to get something out of his car. While he was inside the car, it rolled in the river. Witnesses say Billups got out of the car, but he could not swim to the shore and bystanders could not rescue him.
Billups was 54 years old.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - Prominent hotel developer and Missouri philanthropist John Q. Hammons has died. He was 94.
His company says Hammons passed away Sunday at the Springfield nursing home where he'd lived after stepping away from the company he led well into his 80s.
After his first business went bust in the 1940s, Hammons built subdivisions in southwest Missouri before purchasing 10 Holiday Inn franchises with a partner in 1958.
He went on to build 200 hotels nationwide, avoiding big cities in favor of college towns and state capitals. His expansive real estate portfolio included golf courses and convention centers.
Hammons also donated millions to hospitals, colleges and public television. His name graces so many buildings and streets in Springfield that comedian Bob Hope once joked the city should be named "Hammonsville."
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Matt Carpenter drove in the go-ahead run with an infield single and Pete Kozma hit a three-run double against Clayton Kershaw, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday in the rubber game of their series.
The Cardinals improved the major league's best record to 32-17 and increased their NL Central lead over Cincinnati to 1 1/2 games.
Kozma led off the seventh with a bloop double off the glove of shortstop Dee Gordon as he dived for the ball in short center field. One out later, Carpenter grounded a single off the glove of first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, allowing Kozma to score. Pinch-hitter Matt Adams added an RBI single in the ninth.
Seth Maness (4-1) got credit for the victory in relief of starter Shelby Miller despite retiring only two of the six batters he faced.
