The crime stats for 2013 are out for St. Louis City and crime is down over 5 percent. St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson says that despite a slight up-tick in murders last year--120 in 2013 compared to 113 in 2012--but he believes the perception of St. Louis' crime problem does not match the reality.
"While some say that St. Louis has a crime problem, I agree, we still have work to do," says Dotson, "but our strategies are working and St. Louis is certainly a safer city now than it was just a couple of years ago.
According to the department, crime is down 50 percent since 2006. Dotson says Hot Spot Policing was a huge part of the department's success this year.

As a result of the revised definition, the FBI expected to see an increase in reported rape offense data. However, this does necessarily mean there is an increase in rapes. See the FBI’s UCR guidelines for further explanation of the revised definition for rape.
