Police: testosterone, needles in Pistorius bedroom

Wednesday, 20 February 2013 03:53 Published in National News
PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) - Police say they found two boxes of testosterone and needles in the bedroom of Oscar Pistorius, the Olympian who has been charged with murder in the shooting of his girlfriend.

Detective Hilton Botha made the revelation Wednesday in testimony at the bail hearing for the athlete charged with premeditated murder in the shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

The discovery raises the possibility that the double-amputee Olympian and Paralympian might have been using performance-enhancing substances.

Pistorius became the first Paralympian runner to compete at the Olympic Games in London last year.

Pistorius, 26, has insisted he shot the 29 year old Steenkamp by mistake, fearing there was an intruder in his gated and guarded luxury complex in the capital, Pretoria.

Blues lose to Sharks at home -- trade players with Nashville

Wednesday, 20 February 2013 02:54 Published in Sports
ST. LOUIS (AP) - Antti Niemi made 25 saves and Tim Kennedy scored in the third period to help the San Jose Sharks end a seven-game winless streak with a 2-1 win over the St. Louis Blues yesterday.

The Sharks' seven-game skid was their longest streak since a 10-game run Nov. 5-30, 2005.

Joe Thornton also scored for San Jose, which began the season with a franchise-record seven successive wins.

St. Louis has dropped five consecutive home games. The Blues also had a three-game winning streak halted. The Blues were coming off a 3-0 road trip with wins in Detroit, Calgary and Vancouver.

Kennedy scored the go-ahead goal at 13:02 on a shot from the left faceoff circle that eluded goalie Jake Allen, who had won the first three starts of his career.

Meanwhile, the Blues have traded defenseman Scott Ford to the Nashville Predators in exchange for forward Jani Lajunen.

Gas prices continue to climb in STL and elsewhere

Wednesday, 20 February 2013 02:48 Published in Local News
Gas prices continue to climb in the metro area and across the country. And there's still no clear reason why.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that gas prices in the St. Louis area are 20 cents higher per gallon than they were this time last year. A gallon of regular unleaded is running more than $3.60 at most stations on the Missouri side of the Mississippi -- up about 50 cents in the last month. Prices are closer to $3.90 in the metro-east.

Several reasons are being given for the jump at the pump, including maintenance at several refineries and early switch over to summer blends. But the paper reports that commodities speculators may be the real force behind the increase, since they now dominate the oil market.
