HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - The people of Hattiesburg, Miss., are trying to assess the damage after a tornado tore through the city on Sunday.

It was part of a wave of severe storms that downed trees, damaged buildings and injured more than a dozen people.

The twister traveled down one of Hattiesburg's main streets and mangled homes, commercial buildings and structures on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi. Emergency officials say at least 10 people were injured in surrounding Forrest County and three were hurt to the west in Marion County, but they aren't aware of any deaths.

A Mississippi Emergency Management Agency spokesman says it appears that a single tornado caused the damage in those two counties and Lamar County. Hundreds of homes are damaged in Forrest County, along with a couple dozen in the other two.

On the campus of the university, trees were snapped in half around the heavily damaged Alumni House where part of the roof was ripped away. The university says no one was hurt but that it was under a state of emergency, anyone away from campus should stay away until further notice.

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) - Police evacuated a Los Angeles home improvement store Sunday after a caller said they had seen someone resembling a fugitive ex-police officer suspected of three killings.

Los Angeles police spokesman Gus Villanueva says the caller reported a sighting of 33 year old Christopher Dorner. Police were sent to the Northridge area but Villanueva later said a search of the Lowe's Home Improvement store yielded no evidence that Dorner was there or had been there.

News helicopters earlier showed police helping customers and employees leave the store. A command post was established nearby.

The search since Thursday evening had focused on mountains 80 miles east of Los Angeles where Dorner's burned truck was found. But authorities have found no recent signs of Dorner.

LA officials announced a $1 million reward earlier Sunday for information leading to Dorner's arrest.

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AP) - A rocket carrying an Earth observation satellite is scheduled to blast off from the California coast on a mission to keep a continuous eye on the planet's resources.

The countdown for the Atlas V launch begins Monday morning from the Vandenberg Air Force Base along California's central coast.

The Landsat satellite is the eighth of its kind to be launched since 1972 to track glaciers, forest fires, crop production and coastlines. Unlike its predecessors, the latest carries more powerful sensors and can return more images.

For the past four decades, the polar-orbiting Landsat satellites have documented changes to Earth's surface including the effects of deforestation and urban sprawl.

The $855 million mission is managed by NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey.
