CHICAGO (AP) - Lawyers for imprisoned former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich have appealed his corruption convictions and 14-year sentence.
Monday's filing with the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago comes more than two years after the Chicago Democrat's retrial and 16 months after he entered a Colorado prison.
Jurors convicted the 56 year old for wide-ranging corruption, including his bid to profit from his power to appoint someone to the state senate seat Barack Obama vacated to become president.
His lawyers filed the appeal less than an hour before a midnight deadline to do so.
In June, defense attorneys citing the complicated issues involved received permission to file a longer-than-usual appeal.
A Brooklyn, Illinois police officer is hospitalized in serious, but stable condition after a traffic crash. It happened about 4:30 Sunday morning at Route 3 and Jefferson Avenue.
Police say a Brooklyn officer tried to stop a car, but the driver sped away and slammed head-on into another Brooklyn police car. The 31 year old officer driving that car was ejected.
One person in the suspect's car was seriously hurt.
The suspect, Melvin Fraction, is jailed in St. Clair County on $750,000 bond. It's not clear why he tried to flee, but one of the passengers in Fraction's car was wanted on warrants in Chicago.
Many in St. Louis are upset over the George Zimmerman verdict. About 500 people marched in downtown St. Louis Sunday evening.
Many demonstrators said they were marching to show support for Trayvon Martin's family. Most say they're calling for federal charges or a civil suit against Zimmerman who was acquitted in a criminal trial Saturday.
The St. Louis march was mostly peaceful, with a small splinter group getting police attention after overturning a dumpster. Four were arrested.
Organizers say another march is planned for Thursday.
