St. Louis City school superintendent Dr. Kelvin Adams is greeting students at elementary and middle schools Monday as youngsters arrive for the first day of school. It is the first time in five years that the city schools open as an accredited district. Dr. Adams and other district officials spoke at churches throughout the city on Sunday to urge families to encourage school attendance. Adams says "The data shows the students who are in school on the first day have a dramatic difference in terms of achievement and attendance."
