A former St. Louis County prosecutor who resigned amid a federal investigation in December isn't suspected of any wrongdoing.

An attorney for John Quarenghi told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that his client had stepped down to spare the office any embarrassment after learning that his electronic communications with paralegal Jillian Nichols were being examined by federal investigators.

Nichols was indicted last week (Feb. 19) on charges of wire fraud and lying to the FBI.  She's accused of offering a sexual assault defendant favoritism from an unnamed prosecutor in exchange for $10,000.

Officials say Quarenghi wasn't involved in Nichols scheme, but had dated her.

Residents in Uplands Park will decide next month whether or not to dissolve their tiny village.  In the mean time, the village board is considering how to provide police protection in the cash strapped community.

Residents complain that they've had little to no police protection since the board all but closed their Police Department.

Now St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch is weighing in.  He's sent a letter warning trustees that state law requires them to provide 24 hour police protection.

The village board discussed McCulloch's letter at Monday night's meeting.  They also discussed contracting with St. Louis County for police protection, but the board took no action.

St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch is coming out against a proposal to combine city and county crime statistics for FBI reporting.

County Police Chief Tim Fitch and City Chief Sam Dotson sent that proposal to the FBI Monday.  They argue that reporting St. Louis crime stats regionally would be more accurate since other cities include suburban and rural areas in their figures.

McCulloch told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that combining the numbers is deceptive because the city isn't part of the county.  And he said, it would be unfair to county residents.  McCulloch said the move would cut the city's murder rate in half, while increasing the county's murder rate more than 8 fold.

The STL County crime stats only include unincorporated areas and the municipalities that contract with County PD for protection...about 40-percent of county residents.

The paper reports that the proposed change would have ranked St. Louis 8th instead of 2nd in violent crime among cities with populations between 500,000 and 999,999 in 2010.
