SLU Researcher Earns Big Grant To Study MS

ST. LOUIS (AP) - A Saint Louis University researcher will use a $608,000 grant to study how the autoimmune process that causes multiple sclerosis might be stopped or slowed.

The grant announced Tuesday is from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and went to Dr. Daniel Hawiger.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease of the central nervous system. It occurs when some of the immune system's so-called "T-cells" mistake the nerve fiber coating called myelin as a foreign tissue to be destroyed.

Hawiger will seek to understand how immunological tolerance works and why it sometimes fails. The goal is to design better clinical treatments that selectively suppress immune-medicated damage to the nervous system for those with MS.
