Drivers may still face delays along Interstate 70 near Lambert Airport while police work the scene of a fiery crash on an outer road.

Police say the accident on Natural Bridge at Woodson resulted from a police pursuit.  About 2:00 a.m. a car evading a police stop plowed into a light standard and burst into flames.

Fox 2 News is reporting that a police officer was shot when emergency crews approached the burning car and tried to put out the fire.  That officer was reportedly wearing a vest and wasn't seriously injured.  Police had to back off until the gunfire subsided.

The car was completely destroyed in the fire.  Someone inside that car apparently died, as the St. Louis County Medical Examiner was called to the scene.

Natural Bridge Road remains closed at Woodson.  But all lanes of I-70 have reopened in both directions.

Month-long road closure starts Monday

MoDOT will close Washington Avenue between Memorial Drive and Second Street after rush hour Monday morning.  Transportation officials say the road will be closed for a month.

It's part of the "Park Over the Highway" project that will put a lid over the I-70 depressed section and connect the Arch grounds with downtown St. Louis.

Crews will continue to work around the King Bridge, interstate ramps and surface streets in the area for the rest of the year as the CityArchRiver 2015 project progresses.

Another interstate closure will delay drivers in the metro-east this weekend.

The Illinois Department of Transportation will shut down westbound Interstate 55/70 between IL Rte. 203 and the I-64 merge starting at 9:00 p.m. Friday.

Eastbound Interstate 64 will remain closed this weekend between 25th Street the split.

Detours using Interstate 255 will be marked.

Both closures are related to the new Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge over the Mississippi River.  Both highways should reopen by Monday morning; Westbound I-55/70 by 5:00 a.m.. Eastbound I-64 by 9:00 a.m.

There's good news for drivers in north county.  Missouri transportation officials report that all lanes of westbound I-270 have reopened after a broken water main had shut it down for several hours.

Just before 10 o'clock Monday night police closed westbound I-270 because of the broken main at Old Halls Ferry.  The closure caused traffic to back up all the way into Illinois.

By 1 a.m. Tuesday, one lane had reopened.

At about 2:30 Tuesday morning, MoDOT reported that all lanes had reopened.

Flooding closed Interstate 44 at mile marker 172 near the city of Jerome early Wednesday morning.  As of Wednesday night it was still closed, but MoDOT officials say it could reopen Thursday morning.

In addition, Missouri Route 63 is now closed in two locations - south of Vienna in Maries County and at Westphalia in Osage County - further complicating detour routes.

Motorists are encouraged to use U.S. 60, I-70 or U.S. 36 as alternate routes. This is especially important for commercial motor vehicle traffic approaching Missouri from other states.

Motorists traveling on Route 63 to destinations south of Vienna should take U.S. 50 to Route 28 to U.S. 63. Those traveling to areas north of Vienna should use Routes U and E to get around the closure.

National Weather Service predictions indicate water will overtake the lanes of U.S. 50 at Mount Sterling by mid-morning on Thursday, making travel in the area even more difficult.

“We don’t know for certain when flooded roadways will reopen or what additional flooding might occur,” said Travis Koestner, assistant district engineer of MoDOT’s Central District. “We appreciate motorists' patience as we monitor these roadways and ask motorists not to drive around barricades or attempt to drive through water.”

When the water recedes, MoDOT will inspect pavement and bridges for safety before opening highways for public use.
