BUENA VISTA, Colo. (AP) — More than a thousand people gathered in a small Colorado mountain town Saturday to remember five members of the same family who were killed by a massive rock slide on a popular hiking trail.
Monday's slide across the trail to Agnes Vaille Falls in south-central Colorado's San Isabel National Forest killed 46-year-old Dwayne Johnson, 45-year-old Dawna Johnson and their 18-year-old daughter, Kiowa-Rain Johnson, all of Buena Vista.
The other victims were identified as 10-year-old Baigen Walker and 22-year-old Paris Walkup, both of Birch Tree, Missouri. They were nephews of Dwayne and Dawna Johnson.
The slide also injured 13-year-old Gracie Johnson, who attended Saturday's memorial in Buena Vista. She told rescuers her father saved her when he jumped on top of her as boulders began to crash down around them.
Two Missouri residents are among five people killed in a rock slide on a Colorado hiking trail. Chaffee County Sheriff Pete Palmer says all five were members of an extended family.
The sheriff's department reports that 10 year old Baigen Walker and 22 year old Paris Walkup, both of Birch Tree, Missouri, were among the dead.
Their aunt and uncle, 45 year old Dawna Johnson, 46 year old Dwayne Johnson, and the couple's 18 year old daughter, Kiowa-Rain Johnson were also killed.
All of the victim's bodies have now been recovered.
The Johnson's 13 year old daughter, Gracie survived the slide with a broken leg.
ASHLAND, Mo. (AP) — One lane of a heavily traveled highway between Jefferson City and Columbia is closed by a rock slide, and officials predict occasional delays for several weeks.
The Missouri Department of Transportation announced the closing of one northbound lane of U.S. 63 on Friday afternoon.
The slide was reported late Thursday along a rock bluff south of Ashland, near the Boone-Callaway county line. MoDOT plans to solicit bids Monday on a contract to stabilize the bluff, with work possibly starting Tuesday.
The northbound lane is expected to remain closed for about 10 days. MoDOT says U.S. 63 will be closed periodically throughout the project, which is expected to be finished in early May.
