Family in Sawnsea charged with sexual abuse

An estranged wife has led police in Swansea, Illinois to charge three members of a family with sexually abusing young relatives.

Swansea Police Chief Mike Arnold says the abuse came to light after a 36-year-old man's estranged wife spoke to authorities.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports the abuse may have begun in September 2009. Authorities say it involved girls who are now 16, 14 and 9 years old.

Two men are charged with criminal sexual assault and abuse and the woman who spoke with police is charged with indecent solicitation of a child.

ST. LOUIS— AP -- St. Louis city prosecutors have dropped charges against a former teacher’s aide who was accused of molesting two 4-year-old boys.

John Cuneo was scheduled to go to trial this week on charges of first-degree child molestation, sexual contact with a student by a teacher and first-degree attempted child molestation. His attorney, Scott Rosenblum, was notified Tuesday that the charges had been dropped.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce’s office did not explain the decision, saying she does not comment on closed cases.

Rosenblum says the state’s main witness against Cuneo had credibility problems and several witnesses supported Cuneo.

Cuneo was an instruction care aide for the St. Louis Public School District. He is now retired.

Former Boy Scout volunteer gets more prison time

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A former southwestern Illinois Boy Scout volunteer already imprisoned for molesting boys has been sentenced to 25 more years for sexual misconduct.

Fifty-six-year-old Jon Demers was sentenced to the new prison time this week after pleading guilty to three felony charges, including predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.

St. Clair State's Attorney Brendan Kelly said the latest case involved a 12-year-old boy and a 9-year-old boy in 2009.

Monday's sentence will run simultaneously to a six-year term the former Collinsville man got after being convicted in March of 12 sex-abuse counts involving a boy.

Demers was a Belleville Boy Scout troop committee member and merit badge counselor, but his status with that organization has been revoked. He also was a civilian employee of Scott Air Force Base.

Prosecutors say 34-year-old Joseph Thomas Maddock of Lake St. Louis is charged with statutory sodomy.

He is jailed on $50,000 cash-only bond.

The school placed Marler on leave on Monday.
