FRANKFORD, Mo. (AP) - A 45-year-old suburban St. Louis man accused of shooting his adult son to death told a northeast Missouri deputy that "he had no other choice."

Michael Lee Phillips of St. John is charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action after the shooting death of 22-year-old Jeff Chisholm in rural Pike County last Saturday night.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reports that Phillips said he first fired a warning shot that didn't dissuade his son from advancing as they fought.

A probable cause statement says witnesses reported Chisholm arguing with his girlfriend and then his mother as she tried to prevent her son from driving after he had been drinking.

Phillips was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning. Online court records do not list an attorney on his behalf.

STEELVILLE, Mo. (AP) - A Missouri murder case will hinge on claims of self-defense and whether a property owner had the right to shoot a canoer who may have intruded on his land.

James Crocker had grown weary of the people encroaching on his property along the Meramec River. A nasty confrontation in July ended when Crocker allegedly shot and killed Paul Dart Jr., who was on a canoe trip.

Defense attorney Michael Bert says Crocker is covered by the state's castle doctrine, which allows the use of deadly force to protect property. Bert says Crocker also felt his life was in danger.

Prosecutors cited witnesses who said Crocker flew into a rage and opened fire after a man relieved himself near his yard. He has been charged with second-degree murder.

Man shot, killed in downtown St. Louis

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis police say a man was killed and a woman wounded by shots fired from a vehicle that was chasing other vehicles.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the shooting happened early Saturday. Police identified the man who was killed as Desmond Adair of St. Louis.

Police say the suspect was in a vehicle that chased two vehicles through city streets. The vehicle in which Adair was riding struck a pole. Occupants in the second vehicle that was being fired upon stopped and pulled Adair out. They took him to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A 23-year-old woman in the second vehicle was shot in the arm. She was listed in stable condition at an area hospital.

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) - A military jury has sentenced Maj. Nidal Hasan to death for the 2009 shooting rampage at Fort Hood, giving the Army psychiatrist what he believed would be a path to martyrdom in the attack on unarmed fellow soldiers.

The American-born Muslim, who has said he acted to protect Islamic insurgents abroad from American aggression, never denied being the gunman. In opening statements, he acknowledged to the jury that he pulled the trigger in a crowded waiting room where troops were getting final medical checkups before deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hasan could become the first American soldier executed in more than half a century once automatic appeals are exhausted. But the lead prosecutor assured jurors that Hasan would "never be a martyr" despite his attempt to tie the attack to his Islamic faith.

Gale Hunt, whose son was killed in the shooting, told reporters, "Anyone who would use their religion to commit acts of terrorism serves no god except their own hatred and self-interest."

Charges are filed against a 20-year-old man for allegedly shooting and killing his teenage sister.

Police say Marcus Anderson accidentally shot his sister, Alicia Anderson in their North St. Louis home Thursday afternoon. It appears that Marcus, who has a mental disability, was playing with a shotgun when he fired the shot. Investigators say the gun did not belong any family members, but was being stored for a family friend.

A judge set Anderson's bond at $20,000.
