Man charged for attempted robbery in CWE

Thursday, 07 February 2013 17:15 Published in Local News
Police have arrested an 18-year-old man in connection to a recent attempted robbery in the Central West End.

Corie Harvey has been charged for allegedly pushing a woman to the ground and then searching her coat and pants pockets. Police were nearby when the attack happened on Monday night, but were not able to capture Harvey.

The victim was not injured in the attack.
ST. LOUIS (AP) - A St. Louis County eating disorder treatment center will pay $140,000 to settle claims that it denied treatment of a woman because she is HIV positive.

The Justice Department announced settlement of the case on Wednesday. Former Nurse Susan Gibson filed a complaint with the Justice Department against Castlewood Treatment Center. She applied to the center in 2010 seeking treatment for anorexia but was rejected.

The American Civil Liberties Union says the clinic falsely claimed its license prohibited the facility from treating people with a blood-borne infection.

Castlewood denied discriminating, saying officials at the center though she would receive more appropriate treatment at an in-patient facility because of her HIV status.

The center will pay Gibson $115,000, and pay $25,000 to the Justice Department in civil penalties.

Illinois lawmakers seek public input on gun control laws

Thursday, 07 February 2013 15:12 Published in Local News
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan is seeking public input on concealed carry of firearms and gun safety at two hearings later this month.

The Chicago Democrat announced Thursday that the Judiciary Committee will have public hearings Feb. 19 at the state Capitol and Feb. 22 in Chicago.

Madigan says the hearings will allow gun-rights advocates, gun-control supporters and police to "offer their views and argue their cases" on the issues.

A federal court rejected the state's concealed-carry ban in December and demanded the Illinois Legislature adopt some form of firearms possession.

Madigan says hearings are important after the court decision and the December school massacre in Connecticut.

Concealed-carry legislation that narrowly failed in 2011 has been re-introduced in the Illinois House.
