Gov. Nixon vetoes bill renaming section of I-70

Thursday, 11 July 2013 12:10 Published in Local News

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has vetoed legislation that included designating part of Interstate 70 as "Graham's Picnic Rock Highway."

Nixon said in his veto message Thursday that the name refers to the Dr. Robert Graham, who owned the farm where the large rock is located.

The rock can be seen in the median of Interstate 70 roughly halfway between Columbia and the St. Louis region.

The governor said a popular outing during the 1880s was to drive horses and buggies to the rock for a picnic. But the rock also has been called "slave rock," which Nixon says comes from a belief that slave auctions occurred at the site.

Nixon says the highway designation would have elevated one part of the site's history above the others.

Former Kinloch Mayor facing federal charges

Keith Conway, the former mayor of Kinloch, find himself in a courtroom again.

Conway is charged with falsifying his employment records while staying at a halfway house. He was staying at the halfway house after serving 21 months for using city money to pay for personal expenses, including buying a condo in Florida. As part of conditions for full release from the bureau of prisons, Conway was to obtain full time employment.

Court documents allege that Conway submitted false paycheck stubs to officials. He faces a five year sentence if convicted of lying.

Defense rests in George Zimmerman trial

Wednesday, 10 July 2013 16:32 Published in National News

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) - Defense attorneys have rested their case in George Zimmerman's second-degree murder trial after calling 18 witnesses over less than a week.

Prosecutors now plan to call two rebuttal witnesses. Both sides will then work on jury instructions before presenting closing arguments. The case is then sent to jurors.

Zimmerman never testified about the fatal struggle with Trayvon Martin. But jurors saw repeated video recordings of Zimmerman telling his story to investigators. The defense started its case last Friday, and it presented about half the witnesses and took half the time as the prosecution.

In the days before the defense finished Wednesday, they called Zimmerman's friends, mother and uncle to testify that it is Zimmerman screaming for help on a 911 call that captured the fatal fight between Martin and Zimmerman.

Zimmerman is pleading not guilty to second-degree murder. He claims he shot Martin in self-defense.
