Residents might notice a stronger stench from the Bridgeton Landfill while crews complete a repair.

A fire broke out at the landfill on Sunday because of a broken pipe. The fire sent smoke billowing into the air and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources had to be called in to test air quality.

Crews are now at work replacing a sump pump. Landfill officials say a stronger odor could be present until work is complete.

Governor Nixon: State will move ahead with execution

Tuesday, 18 February 2014 12:20 Published in Local News
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Gov. Jay Nixon says Missouri is still prepared to carry out an execution next week - even though an Oklahoma pharmacy won't be supplying the drug for the lethal injection.

Nixon declined to say Tuesday whether Missouri would use a different drug than pentobarbital, which was used in the state's past three executions.

The Apothecary Shoppe in Tulsa, Okla., filed court documents late Monday saying it had agreed not to provide any drug for Missouri's scheduled Feb. 26 execution of inmate Michael Taylor.

In a deposition last month, a Missouri Department of Corrections official said the agency has a backup supply of the sedative midazolam and painkiller hydromorphone for executions.

Nixon said Missouri could carry out Taylor's execution without having to make any significant changes to its execution protocol.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Ameren Corp. is promoting Warner Baxter to president of the St. Louis-based utility, effective immediately, and he'll become CEO this spring.

Baxter is a longtime executive at Ameren. He succeeds Thomas Voss, who will retire on July 1.

Ameren said Tuesday that Baxter also has been elected to the board of directors. He will become chief executive on April 24 - the day Voss will become Ameren's executive chairman.

Baxter was executive vice president and chief financial officer of Ameren from 2003 to 2009, and has since served as chief executive of its Ameren Missouri division.

Voss, who is 66, has been president and CEO of Ameren Corp. since 2009 and chairman since 2010.

Ameren provides electric and natural gas services in parts of Missouri and Illinois.
