Police investigating 14th homicide of 2014 in St. Louis

Tuesday, 28 January 2014 14:50 Published in Local News

St. Louis police are investigating the city's fourteenth homicide of the year.

Officers say 21-year-old Erick Burney was walking in the 1500 block of Montgomery in North St. Louis on Monday afternoon, when a driver pulled up alongside him. Investigators say someone inside the car started shooting. Burney was hit multiple times and died at the hospital.

No information on a suspect has been released.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois labor unions have filed a lawsuit seeking a new plan to reduce the state's $100 billion pension shortfall declared unconstitutional.

The We Are One Illinois Coalition of public employee unions filed the lawsuit Tuesday in Sangamon County Circuit court.

The long-anticipated legal challenge comes weeks after Gov. Pat Quinn signed the measure into law and ahead of his annual State of the State address.

The bill approved by the Legislature in early December saves an estimated $160 billion, largely by cutting benefits for employees and retirees.

Unions say it violates the state constitution, which says benefits may not be diminished. Several other lawsuits have been filed on behalf of retirees.

Supporters of the plan believe the Court will uphold it because it's necessary to repair the state's finances.

Tuesday, 28 January 2014 14:47 Published in Local News

A tragic afternoon for a Franklin County family.

Police are investigating after an 8-year-old boy died on a school bus Monday afternoon. Investigators say Bradley Voss collapsed on the bus around 3:45 yesterday. The bus driver performed CPR until emergency crews arrived. Voss was taken to the hospital where he died. School officials say the boy showed no signs of illness through the day before he collapsed.

No foul play is suspected in the death and an autopsy is planned.
