Tubby tabby moved to animal sanctuary

Friday, 29 March 2013 11:20 Published in Local News

ST. CLAIR, Mo. (AP) - A fat cat that drew international attention when its owner turned him over to a shelter is now living at a sanctuary for hard-to-place animals in eastern Missouri.

The cat, named Biscuit, weighed 37 pounds when he was taken to the St. Charles shelter. More than 110 people offered to adopt him before he was placed with a couple from Eureka earlier this month.

However, Biscuit fought with a cat at that home and the couple couldn't keep him. On Saturday, Biscuit was turned over to The Shannon Foundation sanctuary for hard-to-place animals outside St. Clair in Franklin County. He'll stay there permanently, living with about 75 other animals.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Biscuit weighed 33.2 pounds on Thursday. His goal weight is 14.8 pounds.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Two of the top teams in soccer's English Premier League are coming to St. Louis for an exhibition match.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced Friday that Busch Stadium will host a game on May 23 between Manchester City and Chelsea.

<br><br>

St. Louis has a long soccer heritage but has been hurt in recent years because of the lack of an appropriate venue for big-time matches.

Vicki Bryant, vice president of event services and merchandising for the Cardinals, says the hope is to make a high-profile match an annual event.

<br><br>

The match will be the first professional, non-baseball sporting event at Busch since the stadium opened in 2006.

Tickets starting at $30 go on sale Tuesday, with a pre-sale Monday for Cardinals season ticket holders.

AG Koster wants clarification on contraception ruling

Thursday, 28 March 2013 17:35 Published in Local News

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Attorney General Chris Koster wants some clarification from a federal judge who struck down a Missouri law exempting moral objectors from mandatory birth control insurance coverage.

<br><br>

Koster's office released a statement Thursday saying the ruling earlier this month has created uncertainties for insurers and individuals. He wants the judge to clarify the intended scope of the decision.

<br><br>

Koster released his statement the same day that House Speaker Tim Jones filed a resolution urging the attorney general to appeal the case.

<br><br>

Last year, the Republican-led Legislature overrode a veto by Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon to enact a law requiring insurers to issue policies without contraception coverage if individuals or employers say it violates their "moral, ethical or religious beliefs."

A judge ruled that it conflicted with a federal requirement for contraception coverage.
