Sinkhole swallows golfer at Annbriar

Tuesday, 12 March 2013 01:44 Published in Local News
A Creve Coeur man is nursing a dislocated shoulder, but still counts himself lucky after falling into a sinkhole at Annbrier Golf Course in Waterloo on Friday.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 43 year old Mark Mihal had been standing on the 14th fairway when the ground swallowed him up. He landed in a bell-shaped hole, about 18-feet deep.

The course manager and Mihal's golfing companions used a ladder and some rope to pull him out.

Sinkholes are common in the St. Louis Metro area, but geologists say they are usually easy to spot because of a dent in the ground.
WARREN, Ohio (AP) - Investigators are focusing on speeding as a key factor in the crash of a sport utility vehicle carrying eight teenagers, six of them killed when it slammed into a guardrail and flipped over into a swampy pond.

Authorities are citing an unspecified "high rate" of speed, but would not speculate on whether alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash about 7 a.m. Sunday.

The Honda Passport veered off the left side of a road and overturned, coming to a rest upside down in the swamp. It sank with five of the victims trapped inside. A sixth person thrown from the SUV during the crash was found under it.

Two boys escaped from the submerged vehicle and ran a quarter-mile to a home to call 911.

Tattoo-faced man accused in storage-unit thefts

Monday, 11 March 2013 03:40 Published in Local News
GODFREY, Ill. (AP) - Authorities in Madison County are searching out anyone who may have bought things from an alleged burglar of storage units, and they're confident the purchasers will remember the seller.

Twenty-four year old Adam Roberts is accused of three felony counts of burglary related to thefts last month from as many as 28 storage units in his hometown of Godfrey.

What makes Roberts distinctive is the skeleton-style tattoo over his face - artwork sheriff's Capt. Mike Dixon calls "just odd."

Authorities say they've recovered $1,000 worth of stolen property taken in the break-ins, but they suspect Roberts or an accomplice may have sold other items.

Roberts is jailed on $60,000 bond. Online court records don't show whether he has an attorney.

Anyone having information concerning this investigation or the stolen property is urged to contact the Madison County Sheriff’s Office at the following numbers:

618-692-4433 (Dispatch Center)
618-692-0871 (Investigative Division)
