RACELAND, La. (AP) — Three people have died and two were injured in separate shootings in Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes. Authorities also say the suspect is dead.
The Lafourche Parish Sherriff's Office said on its verified Twitter account that parish Councilman Louis Phillip Gouaux was injured in the first shooting Thursday night in Lockport and his wife, Susan "Pixie" Gouaux, was killed. Gouaux was being treated at a local hospital.
The sheriff's office said the second shooting happened in Raceland, where Ochsner St. Anne Hospital administrator Milton Bourgeois was shot and killed.
A third person was found dead in Terrebonne Parish. The sheriff's office identified her as Denise Taylor Freeman, wife of suspect Ben Freeman, who was found dead in his vehicle.
There was no immediate information about the second injured person.

End of an era as smelter closes in Jefferson County

Thursday, 26 December 2013 03:39 Published in Local News
HERCULANEUM, Mo. (AP) - For more than two centuries, the Mississippi River town of Herculaneum has been tied inseparably to lead. The heavy, dull-gray metal has long been mined in southern Missouri.
But the end of the long tradition is in sight for the small community about 25 miles south of St. Louis. The company that runs the smelter, Doe Run Company, has decided to cease most operations at the end of the year, citing rising regulatory costs.
Lead has been both kind and cruel to Herculaneum. It has given the town an identity and ready jobs, but it also has created environmental and health concerns so worrisome that the federal government designated it a Superfund site.
Many of the town's children were found to have dangerously high lead levels in their blood

Thai police officer killed in clashes in Bangkok

Thursday, 26 December 2013 03:28 Published in National News
BANGKOK (AP) - Thai police say an officer has been killed in clashes between security forces and anti-government protesters in the capital.
Police spokesman Anucha Romyana says the officer died Thursday after being airlifted to a hospital.
It's unclear how the officer died, but police said earlier that an officer had been struck by a bullet during the clashes.
The clashes took place outside a Bangkok sports stadium where candidates were gathering to draw lots for their positions on the ballot ahead of general elections scheduled for Feb. 2.
At least 60 people were injured in the daylong unrest.
The protesters are seeking to topple the government and prevent the elections from taking place as scheduled.
