Ellisville city manager given the boot

Tuesday, 29 October 2013 02:15 Published in Local News

The Ellisville city manager is out -- the latest casualty of political controversy that's divided the west county community.  The city council voted 4-2 Monday night to terminate Kevin Bookout.

Mayor Adam Paul told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Bookout was fired "with cause," meaning he can't collect the six-month severance package called for in his contract.  Paul told the paper that Bookout can seek arbitration on the matter of severance.

Bookout's testimony had been key in Paul's impeachment earlier this year.  That impeachment was later overturned in court.

Paul had campaigned for office on his opposition to tax subsidies for construction of a new Walmart. The city leaders who impeached him had favored the TIFs.

Residents out as two St. Ann apt. buildings condemned

Tuesday, 29 October 2013 01:19 Published in Local News

Residents of two St. Ann apartment buildings found themselves unexpectedly homeless Monday night.

The City of St. Ann condemned two buildings at the Colonial Apartments complex on Geraldine Avenue.  KSDK-TV reports that one has sewer problems and the other, electrical problems.

Residents told the TV station they were given only about an hour to grab what they could and get out.  Others came home from work Monday to find themselves locked out.

St. Ann police have stepped up patrols in the area to prevent looting while residents wait to get back in to gather their things.

The St. Louis Community College system has new leadership.  Interim Chancellor Dennis Michaelis began his new job Monday.

The former Texas college officials was tapped to replace Myrtle Dorsey, who left in late September after the Board of Trustees voted not to renew her contract.

Michaelis told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he doesn't expect to hold the post for more than 18 months.  He Said his focus will be on improving communications and rebuilding the public image of the system.

The college's image suffered a blow after the bungling of the investigation of a student assault on the Meramec campus in April became known.

George Wassen, president of the Meramec campus, resigned shortly after the attack.  The police chief at Meramec and two other officials were fired.
