SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The head of the NAACP Salt Lake City branch is asking Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon to commute a death sentence for a serial killer who killed two Salt Lake City joggers in 1980.
Joseph Paul Franklin is scheduled to be executed next week for the 1977 murder of a Missouri man outside a synagogue. He was also convicted in the 1980s killings of 20-year-old Ted Fields and 18-year-old David Martin, both black men.
Jeanetta Williams, president of the NAACP's Salt Lake Branch, says in a letter to Nixon that the execution costs more than keeping Franklin in prison for life.
Franklin has claimed responsibility for nearly two dozen other killings and many other crimes. He admitted shooting Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt in 1978 but was never charged.
A hiker found dead in Canyonlands National Park in Utah last week is being identified as a 73 year old St. Louis man. The University of Missouri's website says Grant Welland was a retired UMSL professor.
His body was recovered Saturday in Horseshoe Canyon. The remote canyon is famous for its ancient rock art. Welland had been hiking alone. Welland was reported missing Friday, five days into his trek.
Wayne County sheriff's deputies say Welland had been carrying enough water and had good hiking shoes.
The Utah medical examiner will determine a cause of death.
OGDEN, Utah (AP) - Doctors say a Utah man shot in the head by his son-in-law during a Father's Day Catholic Mass is expected to survive.
Dr. Barbara Kerwin of McDay-Dee Hospital in Ogden says James Evans is still in critical condition but expected to live. She says the bullet went through his jaw and cheek, missing the brain.
Police say 35-year-old Charles Richard Jennings Jr. walked into Mass hand-in-hand with his wife, Evans' daughter. Authorities say Jennings went up to Evans and shot him near the back of the Saint James the Just Catholic Church in Ogden.
Jennings was captured Sunday afternoon after fleeing in a stolen pickup truck.
Ogden police don't yet know the motive of the shooting.
The Rev. Eric Richsteig says Jennings had previously made threats but didn't elaborate.
