SYDNEY (AP) — Scores of Australians have evacuated their homes in mountains west of Sydney as intensifying winds fanned wildfires that have ravaged the region for days.

The winds were showering communities with embers Wednesday, and all schools were closed in anticipation of worsening fire conditions in the Blue Mountains. The region lost more than 200 homes to blazes last week.

Springwood resident Rae Tebbutt said the atmosphere was tense in the village that was one of the worst-hit last week.

Rural Fire Service commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons says 71 blazes are burning in New South Wales state around Sydney, including 29 burning out of control.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Evacuating residents say the smoke is unbearable and Idaho officials say high winds are forecast again today in the area of a wind-driven wildfire near Sun valley that's burning its way through sage and pine trees.

Sheriff's deputies have expanded evacuation orders to 1,600 homes for the 100-square-mile Beaver Creek Fire included residences in drainages and foothills west of the towns of Hailey and extending to north of Ketchum in central Idaho.

More than 600 state and federal firefighters were working to get the blaze under control and protect property in the affluent resort region that's a second home to celebrities such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tom Hanks and Bruce Willis. Another 1,000 firefighters will join the battle.

Managers at the Sun Valley Ski Resort turned on water cannons that are normally used for wintertime snowmaking, in case sparks from the fire threaten mountaintop lodges

St. Louis County Police say a bomb scare that forced the evacuation of about 30 Spanish Lake residents Tuesday afternoon was a false alarm.

It began about 4:30 p.m. at a home in the 1400 block of Twillman Avenue.

Investigators say family members had been going through the belongings of an elderly man who'd recently died when they came upon a box marked 1954.  The relatives had already found blasting caps nearby and they initially thought the pipes and other materials in the box were old explosives. So they called police.

The County's Bomb and Arson Squad was called in and an area of about 300 yards around the home was evacuated.

The elderly gentleman had been a pilot and it turned out the box contained old aircraft parts and not  explosives.

Evacuations over after car hits gas line

Residents in one north city neighborhood are back in their homes after a car crash forced their evacuations. It happened at Theodore and Oriole in the Walnut Park neighborhood about 7:30 Wednesday evening.

St. Louis police say a car struck a Laclede Gas service pipe. There was initial concern about a possible gas leak. Half a dozen nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution.

Laclede Gas crews determined that there was no gas leak, so the residents were allowed back home.

There's no word what led to the crash.
