Gas leak closes Fenton intersection

No evacuations are expected due to a gas leak in Fenton.

Police tell Fox 2 News that city workers were repairing a water main at Ferry and Main Streets when they accidentally struck a gas line, rupturing it.  The intersection is closed while utility crews work to repair the line.

Police say gas is escaping, but it's dissipating in the air.

Around two dozen homeowners were evacuated from their houses after a gas leak was discovered.

Just before 9 AM crews were called to the 3400 block of Macklind Avenue. The crews were unable to shut off gas to the house where the leak was located. As a precaution, more than 20 other homes were evacuated.

Alton Middle School will be closed  Tuesday due to a gas leak.

The leak was discovered late Monday morning.  The school was closed and students sent home around 11:00 a.m.

Ameren crews thought they had contained the leak, but it's turning out to be a little tougher to repair than originally thought.  So classes are cancelled while crews continue to work on it.

School officials say the closure is precautionary, since only a small amount of natural gas was detected inside the building.
