EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A 66-year-old southwestern Illinois man has been convicted of molesting a preschool-aged girl.

The Telegraph reports Madison County jurors deliberated 45 minutes Thursday before finding Harvey Simington guilty of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

The South Roxana man told investigators in a taped interview played for jurors Wednesday that the victim, then 4, initiated the incident.

Assistant State's Attorney Amy Gabriel called that explanation preposterous.

Authorities say the abuse took place in early 2011 and surfaced about a year later.

The girl, now 6, is in foster care.

The former St. Charles County teacher who sexually assaulted a 10-year-old, will serve probation.

KMOV reports the victim's family did not want the case to go to trial and that led to the plea agreement. Joseph Maddock will serve five years of probation after pleading guilty to child molestation charges. The abuse happened in early 2013 after Maddock had convinced the boy's family to allow him to home school the child.

Maddock has previously taught at 10 schools in the St. Louis area.

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A Roman Catholic priest whose decades-old molestation of a former altar boy led to a $6.3 million payout in an Illinois lawsuit has been kicked out of the priesthood by Pope Benedict XVI.

Diocese of Belleville Bishop Edward Braxton announced the move involving 78-year-old Raymond Kownacki in a statement published in a recent edition of the diocesan newspaper, The Messenger. Braxton says the papal decree calls the defrocking "for the good of the church."

Kownacki is living in a St. Louis-area nursing home and has refused media requests for interviews. He has not been charged criminally.

Kownacki's misdeeds resulted in a $5 million jury award against the diocese to James Wisniewski in 2008. That payout grew to $6.3 million to reflect interest that accrued while the diocese appealed.
