Be ready for anything: It's Emergency Preparedness Month

Thursday, 05 September 2013 10:37 Published in Local News

September is Emergency Preparedness Month and Metro Transit is teaming up with the Red Cross to offer the public tips on how to survive an emergency. Representatives from both organizations were handing out emergency pamphlets to commuters at the Shrewsbury Metrolink station Thursday. Metro spokeswoman Patti Beck says being prepared is the key to surviving an emergency...

"You need to be prepared for anything," Beck said. "From fire, flooding, earthquake, tornado...anything and everything. There could be a chemical spill or even a hazardous waste spill."

The Red Cross suggests keeping an emergency kit handy, stocked with water, food, flashlights, medications, blankets, and of course...a batter-powered radio.

Police ID motorcyclist killed during Ride of the Century

Tuesday, 03 September 2013 09:40 Published in Local News

A motorcyclist who was killed over the weekend during the Ride of the Century has now been identified. 32-year-old Michael Evans was killed when his motorcycle clipped a parked police car on January Avenue near Elizabeth. St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson says a group of four riders were speeding down the street when three of them veered to the left of the unmarked car. But the motorcycle driven by Evans attempted to pass on the right-hand side when he clipped the side-view mirror of the car. The motorcycle veered out of control and struck a pole in a wooded area near January Avenue. Evans, a Harrisburg, Illinois resident, was pronounced dead at the scene.
