ATF kept out of the loop after Navy Yard shooting

Sunday, 22 September 2013 08:30 Published in National News

WASHINGTON (AP) — Within hours of the Navy Yard shootings, the FBI was tracing the gunman's recent purchase of a shotgun, sending agents to the shop in northern Virginia where he bought it — and leaving the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives out of the loop.

The surprising snub between top U.S. law enforcement agencies comes as the ATF struggles to show its relevance in Washington.

The ATF is the federal agency in charge of tracing traces guns used in crimes, including the military-style semi-automatic rifle used in a rampage at a Connecticut school last year, a similar rifle used in the deadly shooting at a Colorado movie theater and a handgun used to kill six people and critically wound a congresswoman, among others, outside a grocery store in Tucson, Ariz.

Pelosi: Republicans goal is government shutdown

Sunday, 22 September 2013 08:28 Published in National News

WASHINGTON (AP) — Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi says Republicans are using their opposition to health-care reform as an excuse to shut down the federal government.

The California Democrat says anti-government ideologues dominate the GOP and for them forcing a shutdown would be a victory.

She says, however, that GOP efforts to derail health-care reform and shut down the government have "no prospect of prevailing."

Pelosi says the goal of some in the GOP is to get the government out of the lives of Americans by handing Social Security over to private bankers and allowing Medicare to "wither on the vine."

The former House speaker made her comments Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."

Florida child abducted 13 years ago, found in Missouri

Sunday, 22 September 2013 08:27 Published in Local News

CHILICOTHE, Mo. (AP) — A 60-year-old woman has been arrested in the almost 13-year-old abduction of a child in Florida.

The Kansas City Star reports that Sandy Hatte is being held on $25,000 bond in the Daviess/DeKalb County Regional Jail in Pattonsburg. She was arraigned Friday on a charge of felony child abduction. No attorney is listed for her in online court records.

Authorities took custody of the child Wednesday after a school official raised concerns. The biological father traveled to Chillicothe this week to be reunited with his child.

A Livingston County's sheriff's office news release described Hatte as being "somehow related to the family" of the child. Hatte and the child had only lived in Livingston County for about a month.
