KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) - U.S. endurance swimmer Diana Nyad told supporters on a Key West beach that they should never ever give up.
Nyad made the comment Monday shortly after she became the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without the help of a shark cage.
Nyad looked dazed and sunburned and her lips were swollen. She arrived at the beach just before 2 p.m. EDT, about 53 hours after she began her swim in Havana on Saturday.
She is being taken by ambulance to a hospital.
As she approached the beach, spectators surrounded her in the water, taking pictures and cheering her on.
NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) - Thousands of spectators turned out for the annual Newtown Labor Day Parade in Connecticut, capping months of organizing in the aftermath of a shooting rampage that killed 20 first-graders and six educators last December.
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, U.S. Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Christopher Murphy and local officials participated in the 52nd-annual Labor Day parade on Monday.
WFSB-TV reports that the Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire and Rescue Co. and Sandy Hook Elementary School students received the loudest applause from spectators along the parade route.
Organizers were wary about a parade so soon after the shooting rampage at Sandy Hook.
Labor Day Parade Committee head Beth Caldwell says she worked to balance respect for the tragedy with giving the community a celebration.
