Heroin likely involved in gas station restroom death

Wednesday, 15 January 2014 02:21 Published in Local News

Metro-east police say the death of a Worchester, NY woman inside a gas station restroom was probably drug related.

Madison County Sheriff Robert Hertz says 25 year old Angela Lamar, a Belleville native, had been traveling through Illinois with her boyfriend, a truck driver, when the couple stopped at a gas station along I-70 just outside of Highland.

Lamar was unresponsive when she was found inside the station restroom around 1:00 a.m. Sunday.  She was pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Hospital in Highland.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports that investigators seized a syringe and heroin-filled capsules during their investigation.  Sheriff Hertz says investigators suspect a drug overdose, but toxicology tests are still pending.

BJC offering free flu shots

Wednesday, 15 January 2014 01:01 Published in Local News
Health officials are reminding residents, there is still time to get a flu shot. Due to the high number of cases in the region, Barnes-Jewish Hospital is providing free flu shots to people 18 year old and older next week. The shots will be offered at a two-day clinic.
This year’s vaccine is well-matched to protect against the strain of H1N1 hitting relatively young and middle-aged adults particularly hard this winter.
Barnes-Jewish has reported 9 deaths from the flu so far this year and the peak flu season is just getting underway.
The shots will be available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, January 20-21, at the O’Fallon Park Rec Complex, 4343 West Florissant, St. Louis.
For more information, visit www.barnesjewish.org/flu-shots or call 314-867-3627.

I-70 in downtown STL to close for weekend

Wednesday, 15 January 2014 00:57 Published in Around Town

More work on the Park Over the Highway project will mean detours and delays for some drivers in downtown St. Louis this weekend.

Missouri transportation officials say Interstate 70 will be closed in the depressed section starting at 8:00 p.m. Friday.  All lanes will be blocked in both directions between Pine Street and the Poplar Street Bridge.  It's scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.

Drivers will need to use I-64 or surface streets to get around the closure.
