9/11 anniversary to be marked with tributes

Wednesday, 11 September 2013 01:40 Published in National News

NEW YORK (AP) - Sept. 11 victims' loved ones will gather at ground zero to commemorate the attacks' anniversary with the reading of names, moments of silence and serene music that have become tradition.

At Wednesday's ceremony on the 9/11 memorial plaza, relatives will recite the names of the nearly 3,000 people who died when hijacked jets crashed into the World Trade Center, at the Pentagon and near Shanksville, Pa.

The Pentagon and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville also plan name-reading, wreath-laying and other tributes.

The anniversary is expected to be the last before the Sept. 11 museum opens at ground zero. That's due this spring.

Changes also are coming at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville. Officials gathered there Tuesday to mark the start of construction on a visitor center.

Assault rifle raffle at Nieves' fundraiser is drawing fire

Wednesday, 11 September 2013 01:31 Published in Local News

A fundraiser for a state senator from the St. Louis area is drawing fire.

State Senator Brian Nieves (R) plans to give raffle off an AR-15 assault rifle at a fundraiser in Pacific next month.  Raffle tickets will go to supporters who give $1,000 or more at the October 12th event.

Critics accuse Nieves of stunting to draw support for an override of Nixon's veto of a controversial gun rights bill -- a bill that criminalizes the enforcement of federal gun laws in Missouri, and which Nieves sponsored.

But the Senator says this isn't the first time he's given away a gun at a fundraiser, its just the first AR-15.

Missouri lawmakers will gather in Jefferson City Wednesday and attempt to override a number of Nixon vetoes, including House Bill 436.

Nieves represents Franklin and western St. Louis Counties.

MOSCOW (AP) — A Soyuz capsule carrying three astronauts touched down on Earth Wednesday after undocking from the International Space Station following 166 days in space.

NASA's Chris Cassidy and Russians Pavel Vinogradov and Alexander Misurkin landed safely in Kazakhstan, where they launched on March 29.

Live NASA footage showed the three men emerging from the capsule and onto the sunny Kazakh steppe, where they were first put into reclining chairs to help them readjust to the earth's gravity.

The Soyuz is the only means for international astronauts to reach the orbiting laboratory since the decommissioning of the U.S. space shuttle fleet in 2011.
