BJC offering free flu shots

Health officials are reminding residents, there is still time to get a flu shot. Due to the high number of cases in the region, Barnes-Jewish Hospital is providing free flu shots to people 18 year old and older next week. The shots will be offered at a two-day clinic.
This year’s vaccine is well-matched to protect against the strain of H1N1 hitting relatively young and middle-aged adults particularly hard this winter.
Barnes-Jewish has reported 9 deaths from the flu so far this year and the peak flu season is just getting underway.
The shots will be available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, January 20-21, at the O’Fallon Park Rec Complex, 4343 West Florissant, St. Louis.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Influenza cases are rising sharply in Missouri, with nine deaths reported so far this season at one St. Louis hospital alone.

All nine deaths at Barnes-Jewish Hospital involved people in their mid-20s to mid-60s, hospital officials said Friday. That's unusual because flu deaths are more typical among the very young and the very old. Another 35 patients were sick enough to be treated in the Barnes-Jewish intensive care unit.

Officially, Missouri has reported more than 6,700 confirmed flu cases this season. Most cases in Missouri involve the H1N1, or swine flu, strain. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services lumps flu and pneumonia deaths together so the number of statewide flu deaths wasn't known.

Part time employees at one of the metro area's biggest healthcare providers may soon lose their health insurance.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that BJC Healthcare is preparing to cut health insurance benefits for employees who work less than 24 hours each week.

The paper cites two part time nurses as saying that managers and Human Resources representatives recently began informing certain employees of the plan.  Hospital official declined to comment on any planned changes, but did tell the paper that they are in the process of sharing their 2014 benefits plan with employees.

The change of policy could affect thousands of workers at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis Children's Hospital, Christian Hospital and other BJC hospitals, outpatient centers and clinics.

An ambulance stolen outside Barnes Jewish Hospital in the Central West End has been found in East St Louis.

St. Louis police say around 3:00 a.m. Monday morning a MedStar ambulance was taken from the parking bay outside Barnes Jewish hospital, possibly by a woman.

Few details have been released, although police and MedStar officials say the ambulance was found near 15th and College streets in East St. Louis just before six this (Monday) morning.

A quick search reveals no damage to the vehicle, the keys were left inside and nothing appeared to be taken.
