Cardinals to take replay ruling to New York

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals are going to replay school.
Manager Mike Matheny believes a contested play late in the Cardinals' 9-8 loss to the Mets would have been overturned had the new review process used the same video feed the team saw so he's planning on discussing the call with officials in the commissioner's office.
Matheny says he wants to get an idea of how the system will work under the established guidelines.
During the regular season, rulings under new expanded replay system will be made in New York. This spring, the league gas been testing it by using video trucks parked outside ballparks. Fewer television angles are being used for exhibition games.
Umpires in Jupiter needed about two minutes to uphold a call on a play at third base.

Wacha workload not a concern for Cardinals

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) - The Cardinals are not putting a limit on the workload for young pitching star Michael Wacha.
Pitching coach Derek Lilliquist says there's no reason to. Wacha pitched 170 innings last year and his coach says he could be a 200 inning guy this year.
Wacha's readiness became more important this weekend after Jaime Garcia returned to St. Louis to have his surgically repaired shoulder examined.
Last season, only Adam Wainwright and Lance Lynn eclipsed the 200-inning mark for the Cardinals.
Shelby Miller exceeded 170 innings as a rookie, but the team slowed him down.

Cardinal's spring training camp officially gets busy Thursday with the first official workouts.  Pitchers and catchers reported to Jupiter, Florida the day before.
Cardinals' Manager Mike Matheny says the talent pool of young pitchers this year is amazing. "Some of the guys we have as leaders in the group don't have a whole lot of experience, but that's just kind of the club we have," he said.
Matheny says it's going to be fun watching this group of young, talented pitchers continue to improve and grow.  But the bottom line is competition.  "We've got some very young guys and very talented guys and they're going to have to step in and compete," he said.  "That idea that we're just constantly going to be hounding on them is just competing non-stop.  No matter who you are, no matter what you've done, come in here and work in Spring Training like you've got something to prove, which you do."
Eight pitchers with proven major league experience are competing for five starting positions.

Cardinals third baseman David Freese will have an MRI on his back Monday. Freese has had only 15 at bats since falling into the stands going for a foul ball back on March 4th.

Meanwhile the Cardinals started strong, but blew a healthy lead against the Mets Sunday. Jake Westbrook pitched six innings, allowing just two earned runs, but then the bullpen came in and gave up seven runs in the final three innings...The Cards lost to the Mets 10-7.

The St Louis baseball Cardinals have extended General Manager John Mozeliak's contract through 2016 and picked up manager Mike Matheny's option for 2014. The announcement was made Thursday morning by team President Bill DeWitt, Jr. at spring training camp in Jupiter, Florida.

KTRS Sports contributor Joe Strauss tweets that if Mozeliak serves out his term as GM, he and predecessor, Walt Jocketty, will have steered the club for 23 seasons.

Mozeliak, who is entering his sixth season as the team's general manager, had his contract extended through 2016.

During Mozeliak's tenure as GM, the Cardinals have won the 2011 World Series and they have been to the postseason three times, including the past two seasons.

The 2012 club, managed by Matheny, was one win away from a second consecutive National League pennant when it lost a three-games-to-one lead in the National League championship series to the San Francisco Giants.
