Fewer drivers than expected are using a new Mississippi River bridge downtown.

The new Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge carries Interstate 70 over the river between Illinois and Missouri.  It had been projected to reduce traffic by as much as 50 percent of the Eads and Martin Luther King Bridges, and by 20 percent on the Poplar Street Bridge.

But that hasn't happened.  KMOV-TV reports that data shows that since the Stan Span opened in February, the Eads Bridge has seen a decline of about 25 percent, and King Bridge traffic has dropped about 40 percent, but traffic on the Poplar is down only 7 percent.

Transportation officials say part of the issue is that traffic is up about 7 percent overall on all of the downtown bridges.

Stan Span handles first weekday rush hour

Motorists are reporting some confusing signs around one of the approaches to the new Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge.

For the morning rush hour, drivers from the Illinois side on Interstate 70 noticed a closed sign over the exit for the bridge, even though the Stan Span is officially open. Some GPS units are not recognizing the bridge yet--although it appears Google Maps has updated to include the bridge.

Transportation officials are still optimistic and say the bridge will reduce traffic on the Poplar Street each morning by about 20 percent.

Work on the Park over the Highway is causing delays for some drivers in downtown St. Louis today.

The eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 have been closed overnight between Pine Street and the Poplar Street Bridge.  The closure allowed crews to remove a retaining wall.

MoDOT officials say one lane alont eastbound I-70 had reopned before 5 a.m. Monday.  The other lane will remain closed until about 3:00 p.m.

Drivers should expect days heading into the depressed section along eastbound I-70 most of the day.

Christie critics seize on ex-loyalist's claims

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Gov. Chris Christie's critics are seizing on claims from a former loyalist that the Republican governor knew about massive traffic tie-ups near the George Washington Bridge last year as they were happening.

The lawyer for the former Port Authority of New York and New Jersey executive who ordered them said in a letter released Friday that evidence exists that Christie was aware.

No evidence was presented in the letter.

But the allegation contradicts Christie's claim that he was unaware of the jams until after they happened.

They were the result of lane closures that appear to have been politically motivated.

The Democratic National Committee says the allegations mean that Christie could be forced to talk about things other than Sunday's Super Bowl being held in his state.

MoDOT has work planned this week that will close sections of the Poplar Street Bridge.

Crews will close the ramp from northbound Interstate 55 to the eastbound Poplar Street Bridge from 8 PM Wednesday until 5 AM Thursday. Then starting at 8 PM Thursday until 5 AM Friday, crews are closing the ramp from eastbound I-70 to the bridge.

On Wednesday night, commuters should use westbound I-70 to Salisbury Avenue, turn around on the bridge, and take eastbound I-70 to get onto the PSB.

On Thursday, drivers should detour southbound on I-55 to 7th Street, cross beneath the interstate, take a right on Marion Street, and then take northbound I-55 to get onto the PSB.

All work is weather permitting.
