CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) - A Southeast Missouri State University building will remain closed through mid-August after a rooftop fire.

The university made the announcement Thursday after insurers and engineers assessed the damage that Monday's fire caused to Robert A. Dempster Hall. The building houses business programs and some administrative offices.

The university said in a news release that portions of the building sustained roof, water and smoke damage. Vice president for finance and administration, Kathy Mangels, says the first priority is to get classrooms ready for the fall semester.

During the closure, students and staff have been moved to alternative locations.

A St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame could be on its way to downtown.

Greg Marecek, who heads the hall of fame, is looking to move the display from Scottrade Center to a freestanding three-level museum at Union Station. The Post-Dispatch reports the building would cost $25 million and Marecek hopes to raise a third of that money this year.

Union Station is a more appealing site because owner, Lodging Hospitality Management, plans to spend $25 million to upgrade the facility.

If funding is secured, construction on the Hall of Fame would take about a year.

A building on the national historic registry now has an expiration date.

If a buyer does not come forward to purchase the building in the next month, it will be torn down. Cupples 7, at 11th and Spruce in downtown St. Louis, has been designated for demolition after engineers said the building is an imminent danger.

Mayor Slay says the only hope for the building is for an angel investor to step forward and renovate it. Cupples 7 was built between 1894 and 1917.
