HARRISBURG, Ill.—A southern Illinois high school Spanish teacher is accused of pulling a gun on a woman in a McDonald’s drive-thru lane.
WSIL-TV reports 61-year-old Larry Luna of Harrisburg was arrested Tuesday on two counts of aggravated assault with a weapon.
Harrisburg police say Luna was in his car in line outside a McDonald’s when he began yelling at the woman placing an order in the vehicle in front of him.
Police say Luna brandished a gun when the woman stepped from her car.
Harrisburg schools superintendent Dennis Smith says administrators are waiting for the court case to play out.
Luna is free on bond. Online court records don’t show whether he has an attorney. A message left Wednesday at Luna’s home wasn’t returned.
North Dakota - AP - A school superintendent in North Dakota will resign after he says he took a gun to school to protect himself.
Tioga Superintendent D'Wayne Johnston said in an interview Wednesday that he brought the weapon to the high school on Oct. 2 because of a threat from a boy that resulted in the student's expulsion. Johnston says he should have instead asked for more help from police.
Johnston refused to go into detail about the threat but says the boy had previous discipline problems.
After several people saw the gun, Johnston acknowledged carrying it.
The school board accepted Johnston's resignation at an emergency meeting Friday. The resignation takes effect at the end of the school year.
District officials don't think the incident will result in any criminal charges against Johnston.
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - An aide to Missouri House Speaker Tim Jones has resigned after leaving a loaded handgun in the basement of the state Capitol last month.
The gun belonging to Dave Evans was found Sept. 20 in a black, nylon holster on top of a toilet paper dispenser in a restroom. Police say Evans has a permit to carry concealed weapons.
The speaker's chief of staff, Tom Smith, confirmed Thursday that Evans resigned Sept. 27 as a legislative assistant to Jones. Smith says he was satisfied with the corrective actions Evans agreed to after the incident but that Evans thought it was best for himself and colleagues to step down.
A 2011 Missouri law allows elected officials and their employees to carry concealed firearms inside the Capitol if they have permits.
Ferguson Police have arrested a 17-year-old high school student for bringing a gun to school.
Police say the boy was found with the loaded gun in his backpack at McCluer South High School. Another student alerted school officials to the weapon. School officials also say the student was suspended and could face expulsion.
It appears the gun was stolen.
No jury will be needed to convict a man of shooting a police officer in the face.
Evan Lockhart admitted Monday morning, to shooting Maryland Heights officer Joe Eaganin the face. The admission came shortly before jury selection was set to start. The shooting over two and a half years ago.
Lockhart will spend 30 years in prison for the crime.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis police say a 35-year-old man with a history of domestic violence killed his wife and son before fatally shooting himself.
The Post-Dispatch reports that the man cut lawns for his landlord. When the man didn't show up for work Saturday, the landlord went to the south St. Louis home that the family recently moved into and found the bodies.
The man's 26-year-old wife and 3-year-old child had been shot multiple times. Police didn't immediately release their names.
Police say the man had been charged in May with hitting his wife with a tire iron.
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - A Connecticut man who sold a rifle to the mother of the Newtown school shooter has pleaded guilty to failing to have a purchaser answer a question on a form related to citizenship.
The transaction that led to the guilty plea involved a different customer.
The U.S. attorney's office says Krystopher DiBella pleaded guilty Monday in Bridgeport to aiding and abetting the failure to make a proper entry on the form. Prosecutors and DiBella's lawyers have agreed to recommend three years of probation for the 25-year-old West Suffield resident.
DiBella worked at Riverview Gun Sales in East Windsor. The Associated Press has reported Nancy Lanza bought from Riverview a Bushmaster rifle used in the December shooting by her son. Adam Lanza killed his mother at their home and then 26 people and himself at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
A Troy, Missouri man has his prized gun back thanks to an apparent change of heart by the thief, following an emotional appeal on Facebook.
KSDK-TV reports that Chad Smith of Troy discovered Saturday that his Smith & Wesson pistol had been stolen. The gun had been handed down to him from his father.
Both Smith and his dad worked as pastors. Smith currently runs a ministry for troubled kids. He suspected one of them may have stolen the gun.
Smith posted a video offering forgiveness for the thief. Word spread through friends and strangers about the video.
On Sunday - Father's Day - the gun turned up on Smith's porch.
An East St. Louis man is headed back to prison after being found with a gun.
Willie Springer was found with an SKS rifle after running from an officer during a traffic stop. Springer's previous conviction made it illegal for him to own the weapon.
The investigation was conducted by the WAVE Task Force--which was assembled to combat violent crime in East St. Louis.
The measure has been proposed in O'Fallon. The Suburban Journals of Greater St. Louis reports it could be subject of a vote on March 28.
Co-sponsors Jim Pepper and John Haman Jr. say the bill would not invalidate existing laws but protect the rights of residents to bear arms. But Councilman Bob Howell questioned the need for the bill and urged major revisions. Howell says that while he supports protecting gun rights, he believes the bill puts the city in the position of passing an unconstitutional law.
