Closing arguments begin in Donald Trump trial
Wednesday, 22 May 2013 10:35 Published in National NewsCHICAGO (AP) - An attorney for an 87-year-old grandmother who accuses Donald Trump of cheating her in a condo deal has told jurors the "Apprentice" star lied on the witness stand.
The accusation came as closing arguments began Wednesday in the week-old trial in Chicago.
Plaintiff attorney Shelly Kulwin told jurors Trump stepped on the stand before them "to lie, evade and spout infomercials."
His voice rising, he portrayed the case as a battle between an honest woman and a powerful billionaire. He said only in other countries are the powerful guaranteed to prevail at trial. He boomed, "Not in America!"
Jacqueline Goldberg alleges that Trump cheated her when she bought properties at the Trump International Hotel & Tower in Chicago. Trump has denied the allegations.
Jurors will withdraw to deliberate later Wednesday.
Judge: Hollister unfriendly to disabled people
Wednesday, 22 May 2013 10:31 Published in National NewsDENVER (AP) - A federal judge in Denver is considering an injunction after ruling that nearly 250 Abercrombie & Fitch Co. and J.M. Hollister LLC clothing stores are unfriendly to the disabled.
The judge agreed in March with the Colorado Cross-Disability Coalition that the retailers that cater to a hip, young clientele limited access for customers in wheelchairs.
He said the only remedy under the Americans With Disabilities Act is an order to fix the problems, and individuals can't be compensated.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of several Colorado customers who say they had trouble getting into stores and the sales countertops are too high.
The companies say they complied with all construction standards in effect at the time.
New Albany, Ohio-based Abercrombie & Fitch is the parent company of Hollister.
VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AP) - The U.S. Air Force has launched an unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile from a California base, a month after the test flight was postponed because of tensions with North Korea.
Vandenberg Air Force Base says the Minuteman 3 lifted off at 6:27 a.m. PDT Wednesday. It later splashed down thousands of miles away in the Pacific.
It's the first Minuteman test-launch of the year. Several Minutemans are launched each year at from Vandenberg to determine the weapon system's accuracy and reliability.
Officials say the original mid-April flight plan was delayed to avoid it being misconstrued by North Korea during a time of heightened tensions. It was rescheduled for Tuesday morning but was pushed back a day due to a problem with range safety instruments.
