Powerball jackpot to near record heights, again

Monday, 17 February 2014 01:42 Published in Local News

Another big Powerball jackpot is up for grabs this week.

Lottery officials said no one matched all six numbers for Saturday's $330.8 million drawing. So the prize for Wednesday's drawing is expected to be the fourth-biggest Powerball jackpot and sixth-highest lottery prize of all time.  The estimated jackpot: at least $400 million.  That's just over $227 million for a single winner who opts for a lump sum.

Powerball jackpots have set several new records since January 2012, when ticket prices rose to $2 and starting prizes were raised to $40 million.

This pot has been growing since December.

NY fashion designer found dead in Hudson river

Monday, 17 February 2014 01:37 Published in National News
NEW YORK (AP) — Police have identified the body of a man found floating on the Manhattan side of the Hudson River as that of a fashion designer who was reported missing last week.
Police say 55 year old Michele Savoia's body was discovered off Chelsea Piers Sunday afternoon not far from where he lived aboard his boat. The cause of death has not yet been determined.
It wasn't clear how Savoia ended up in the river, but police do not suspect foul play. He was last seen alive leaving a nearby nightclub early Thursday morning.
Savoia reportedly designed hand-crafted suits for celebrities and had a boutique on the Lower East Side.

Ethiopian plane forced to Geneva; hijacker nabbed

Monday, 17 February 2014 01:26 Published in National News
GENEVA (AP) — An Ethiopian Airlines plane destined for Rome was forced to land early Monday in Geneva, where the hijacker was arrested, authorities said.
The airline said one of its planes had been "forced to proceed to Geneva." Its website said the flight landed safely and "all passengers and crew are safe." It gave no further details.
Police escorted passengers one by one, their hands over their heads, from the taxied plane to waiting vehicles.
Swiss police said the plane made an unscheduled landing in the Swiss city at 6 a.m. (0500 GMT) and the hijacker was arrested. Police spokesman Jean-Philippe Brandt told The Associated Press that "the situation is under control" and nobody on the flight was injured.
Further details of the incident were to be released at a news conference in Geneva at 9 a.m. (0800 GMT).
Cairo airport officials said the pilot of the plane, flight 702, informed the control tower at Abu Simbel in southern Egypt that his plane had been hijacked. The pilot did not ask to land in Egypt, and the plane headed for Libyan airspace, they said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to brief the media.
Geneva airport said departures would resume at 8.15 a.m. (0715 GMT) and arrivals at 8.45 a.m. (0745 GMT).
