12 hurt in Orlando-area day care center crash

Wednesday, 09 April 2014 15:44 Published in National News
WINTER PARK, Fla. (AP) — A vehicle crashed into an Orlando-area day care Wednesday, injuring a dozen people, 11 of them children, a Florida Highway Patrol official said.
Several were reported to be "very, very serious condition," said highway patrol spokeswoman Wanda Diaz. The injured include 11 children and one adult.
"This is a very fluid situation and we need as much as help as possible," FHP spokeswoman Wanda Diaz said.
Diaz said a silver or grayish Dodge Durango crashed into a vehicle that then struck the KinderCare building in Winter Park. The Durango then left.
The vehicle is believed to have damage to the front bumper. Anyone with information is urged to call the patrol at 407-737-2300 or 911.
"Please keep a look out and let us know if you see anything," said Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs said.
Jacobs called the crash an "absolute tragedy and disaster."
Local television footage showed small children and infants in cribs taken outside on the day care's playground and several of the injured were carried out on stretchers.
The highway patrol reported that the injured were taken to five different hospitals.
A woman who answered the phone at KinderCare said she didn't have time to talk.

Two people are facing charges and third is still at large in a kidnapping and robbery on the campus of SIU-Edwardsville.  At a press conference Wednesday afternoon, campus police said the victim had been set up by a friend.

Two other SIU-E students, 18 year old Jabreel Watson and 20 year old Shantel Rogers are charged with felony kidnapping, armed robbery and burglary.  Police say they are still looking for a third suspect, an unidentified male.

On April 2nd an SIU-E student had reported being set upon outside his residence hall.  He reported being forced into a car at gunpoint, driven to an ATM and forced to withdraw cash.  He wasn't injured.

Police are hoping surveillance video from the ATM's camera will help in their search for the third suspect.

Police say the victims' 18 year old son is among the four suspects arrested in the deaths of a St. Francois County couple whose home burned Monday morning.

The bodies of 50 year old Stanley Halter and his 46 year old wife, Tammy were found after firefighters extinguished the pre-dawn blaze at the couples rural Park Hills home.  Police say an autopsy indicated that Stanley and Tammy Halter had been murdered.

Four people are now in custody, including 18 year old Dallas Halter, the couple's son.  Also in custody are 19 year old William Carrico, 19 year old Adam Moore and 24 year old Maxwell Lee.  All four were arrested on Wednesday at different locations in and around Ironton County.

Police haven't released a possible motive for the killings.
