Missouri and Illinois open warming centers

Tuesday, 28 January 2014 11:21 Published in Local News
Even though the wind has subsided, the temperatures in the area are still frigid. With this round of arctic air, some churches are opening their doors to serve as warming shelters.
St. Patrick Center and The Bridge Centenary United Methodist Church are open today and Christ Church Cathedral will open as an overnight shelter tonight. City warming shelters are also open. For locations and hours, visit our website,  ktrs.com.

Meanwhile, the cold weather has also prompted Illinois to open warming centers across that state, including on West St. Louis Ave. in East Alton and on Madison Ave. in Granite City.
Two shelters are open in East St. Louis. One is on North 9th St. and the other is on James Thompson Blvd. The warming centers are open from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.

St. Louis City-County merger isn't idea embraced by all

Tuesday, 28 January 2014 11:17 Published in Local News
ST. LOUIS (AP) - With growing talk of a merger between St. Louis city and St. Louis County, a new group has formed in opposition.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Common Sense for St. Louis now has about 40 members. The group's goal is to ensure that a statewide referendum on a merger does not make it to a ballot.
St. Louis is Missouri's only city that is not part of a county. The split occurred in 1876.
In recent years, the city and county have begun to share some duties.
In November, a new nonpartisan group called Better Together was formed to consider the feasibility of a merger. It includes St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay and St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley as members.

Lambert Airport sees decline in passengers

Tuesday, 28 January 2014 10:50 Published in Local News

Lambert-St. Louis International Airport recorded a dip in passenger activity for 2013.  The decrease was about one percent overall, or a drop off of about 112-thousand passengers.

The airport did serve over 12.5 million passengers last year. Lambert reported a positive finish to 2013 with an increase in passenger travel of nearly 2.5 percent in December.

That was a rebound after November saw the biggest monthly drop in passenger travel for the year.  For 2013, Southwest Airlines remained the top carrier with a nearly 49 percent market share.

American is Lambert’s second biggest carrier with about a 15-percent share of the market.
