SYDNEY (AP) — Scores of Australians have evacuated their homes in mountains west of Sydney as intensifying winds fanned wildfires that have ravaged the region for days.

The winds were showering communities with embers Wednesday, and all schools were closed in anticipation of worsening fire conditions in the Blue Mountains. The region lost more than 200 homes to blazes last week.

Springwood resident Rae Tebbutt said the atmosphere was tense in the village that was one of the worst-hit last week.

Rural Fire Service commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons says 71 blazes are burning in New South Wales state around Sydney, including 29 burning out of control.

Former Republican gubernatorial candidate Dave Spence is pulling his name from consideration for a seat on the St. Louis County Police Board.

County Executive Charlie Dooley's office released a withdrawal letter from Spence on Tuesday.  In it, Spence cited the new screening process enacted by the County Council in the wake of an FBI investigation of former police board chairman Gregory Sansone.

Dooley told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Tuesday evening that the newly adopted audit of police board appointees leaves a nominee’s financial record open to scrutiny through Sunshine Laws.

St. Louis police say three people taken into custody yesterday aren't connected to the murder of a teen who was gunned down near a school bus stop Tuesday morning.

Police say 16 year old James Moore had been waiting for the school bus at Goodfellow and St. Louis Avenue when a masked man got out of a car, chased him into a nearby park and shot him several times.  Moore died at the scene.

Later in the day, police stopped a car matching the description of the one used in the murder.  The three suspects from that car who were initially questioned in the murder didn't get off scot-free.  They're facing charges for fleeing from police.

The investigation into Moore's death is ongoing.  Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 1-866-371-TIPS.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The FBI is looking into whether a child found at a Gypsy camp in Greece is a Kansas City, Mo., girl, although the children's ages don't appear to match.

FBI spokeswoman Bridget Patton said Tuesday the October 2011 disappearance of Lisa Irwin from her Kansas City home remains an open investigation and that agents follow up on all tips. Patton says the agency began receiving calls after the image of a girl found with a Gypsy couple appeared in media reports.

A dental examination showed the girl in Greece, known only as "Maria," is older than previously thought - 5 or 6, instead of 4.

Lisa would turn 3 in November. Her family's attorney, John Picerno, says he has spoken to authorities about the investigation in Greece.
