It may be a while before anyone knows what killed a Highland, Illinois teen found unresponsive in a friend's dorm room at the University of Missouri Sunday morning.
University Police say emergency crews arrived about 9:00 a.m. to find 18 year old Gregory Holthaus unconscious and not breathing. He was rushed to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police don't suspect foul play, but a cause of death has not yet been determined. The investigation is ongoing.
Friends and family held a memorial service for Holthaus at the Highland town square Sunday evening.
MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — Legal experts say a New York court case has exposed a possible loophole in the Son of Sam law.
Because Leatrice Brewer was found not guilty by reason of mental disease after drowning her three children in a Long Island bathtub in 2008, she may be eligible to a share of the children's $350,000 estate.
That money is from a lawsuit the children's fathers settled after claiming county social services workers failed to properly monitor Brewer and her children.
Son of Sam laws are intended to prevent convicted criminals from profiting from their crimes. New York was the first state to enact such a law in the 1970s following the capture of notorious serial killer David Berkowitz.
A court hearing in Brewer's case is scheduled for next month.
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is set for her first visit to a gun show since she survived an assassination attempt in 2011.
The former Arizona congresswoman plans to highlight a voluntary agreement that closely monitors gun show sales in New York. It's part of her national campaign for stricter gun control.
Giffords and her husband, Mark Kelly are touring the Saratoga Springs Arms Fair on Sunday with Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.
Schneiderman had worked with all 35 gun show operators in New York to adopt stringent new rules to track sales. Schneiderman also has a staff member at each gun show to work with operators to monitor compliance with the state's new gun control law.
GIffords was shot in the head while meeting with constituents in Tucson. Six people died.
