The first of more than 30 defendants expected to surrender Tuesday in Atlanta's school cheating scandal has turned herself in to authorities.
Fulton County Jail records show that Tameka Goodson was in custody early Tuesday after being booked into jail on charges of racketeering and making false statements and writings. Goodson was an instructional coach at Kennedy Middle School.
35 educators within the Atlanta school system, including former Superintendent Beverly Hall, were named in a 65-count indictment last week that alleges a broad conspiracy to cheat, conceal cheating and retaliate against whistleblowers in an effort to bolster student test scores and, as a result, receive bonuses for improved student performance.
Prosecutors set a Tuesday deadline for all defendants to surrender to authorities.
GENEVA (AP) - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says he fears North Korea is on a collision course with other nations that could lead to war.
Ban says "the current crisis has already gone too far" because of escalating tensions raised by North Korea's almost daily threats of war against the United States and South Korea.
North Korea also vowed today to escalate production of nuclear weapons material, including restarting a plutonium reactor shut down in 2007.
A horrifying night for a south city couple after they find their two-year-old son hanging from a window blind cord.
Investigators say the toddler died after he climbed up into the windows of his bedroom in their home off Water Street in south city and got tangled up in a long nylon cord from the window blinds.
The boy’s mother found him hanging several feet off the ground with the cord around his neck. Police do not know how long the child had been there.
Police say the husband tried to perform CPR until EMS crews arrived. The toddler was pronounced dead at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. This happened Monday night around 7:45.
The parents were not taken into custody. Police are calling it a tragic accident.
Consumers who have window blinds with loops should immediately visit the Window Covering Safety Council website, Windowcoverings.org, or call 800-506-4636 to receive a free repair kit for each set of blinds.
